Hi,

Is it possible to replace the starter solenoid in 2002 q45 without undoing the upper starter bolt/without starter removal?

It looks easy at first: 3 wires quickly disconnected, and 2 Phillips screws to remove. Not enough room to put in a screwdriver, but I could build a tool with screwdriver tip to get at 90 degree angle into the tight spot and unscrew the screws. But will the solenoid come out? Has anyone tried that? Obviously the screws will have to stay in the starter body, so the solenoid would have to slide out from them and come off the plastic hook inside, and this is the step I'm not sure about.

here is more background:

thanks!

Since you replaced the starter relay, I wouldnt waste my time with just trying to replace the solenoid, if you even can get just the solenoid (I doubt it).

Replace the starter and put the issue to bed.. :)

Thanks but it's too late, the solenoid replaced today. I took the car to the dealer and had them do the job, I was thinking about doing what you've suggested but they did not have the starter in stock, so it's just solenoid which I bought earlier. According to the mechanic it was faulty as the plastic which holds the plungers end in place deteriorated from the heat, so hopefully I will not have to do the starter next.

They quoted 1h, and after looking at it changed the quote to 3h (I ended up paying for 2h). They had to remove the starter and lift the engine from the mounts.

Let's keep the fingers crossed that's it. I will post back if more work is needed.
