My son just got a 2002 Sentra Spec V. It came with a 4 into 1 header bolted to an aftermarket down pipe and exhaust. There are wires attached to the header. Does anyone think this will pass a California smog inspection? Will I have to install the entire stock exhaust or could I possibly get away with just the stock exhaust manifold (with catalytic converter) somehow bolted to the aftermarket down pipe? Any advice is appreciated as we are newbies with Sentras.

Some aftermarket stuff is legal as long as it has an ARB E.O.#. If there is no precat on the car then it isnt legal no matter what. See if you can come up with the maker of the pipe and header and I have a data base I can search for E.O.#'s I would link it to ya but it is a huge data base and very difficult to navagate through if you dont know how it works. Even the exhaust piping needs to have an E.O.# to be smog legal.

It's a Stillen 4 into 1 header and Stillen down pipe. I'll probably place the stock pieces back in just to be safe. Out of curiosity will the aftermarket parts not pass the visual inspection and the actual emissions test too?

If you dont have the pre cat it will fail both, If you have the cat the rest of the exhuast may fail the visual. Even the pipes running to the muffler and including the muffler must have an EO#. This applies to 96 and newer vehicles. I have seen many exhuast cat back systems installed and usually get through emissions with out visual failure although technically it needs an EO#

There are no EO numbers published for any exhaust mods to sentras at all in the online database. The only stillen exhuast mod with an EO listed is for a honda.

Thanks for all the help. I installed the stock exhaust manifold with the cat and the stock downpipe. It still has the aftermarket mufflers because I didn't have the stock one to install. I'll take it in tomorrow to see if it passes smog and let you know how it does. Props to everyone in this forum!

Your exhuast from past the cat will likely get over looked. Most smog techs dont make a fuss about it if its not factory. I dont make a big deal out of it when I inspect and test them simply because it doesnt make a big difference on emissions impact. If there is not enough back pressure in the exhuast due to the aftermarket exhuast and the EGR has a BPT it will fail the NOx portion of the test. On your car you dont have EGR so you dont need to worry about it.
