The transmissions on 02s tend to be very stiff when cold. Did you let it warm up and try again? There was also a recall on some of them, though I'm not sure if this is a symptom of the recall issue. Call a dealer and have the VIN checked.

Check the shifter cables out under the console. If the previous owner had installed a "short shifter" at any time they tend to bend and brake the cables. Unscrew the shift knob, pull up on the back (closest to the E-brake) of the plastic surround that the boot is attached to, and there will be a plug for the lighter to unplug. Once you have done this check the cables to see if either is bent or broken. The pass side is the one that tends to have this issue but only with aftermarket short through shifters.my example

Which brings me to another question, actually. Was the shifter moving and wouldn't fall in gear mechanically, or was it hard to actually push the shifter into position?

when the car is off i can shif it through all the gears fine but when the car is on i cant. if i push the shifter up to first it grinds so i dont force it. that happens for all the gears when the clutch it against the floor

Definitely call a dealer about that recall.

It could simply be that your clutch isn't disengaging when you push in the pedal. Have someone listen near where the trans and engine mate to hear if the clutch is moving when you depress and release the pedal.

Oh, sorry, I thought you meant that the ECU reprogram did it.

Anyway, that movement means your clutch is engaging.

There was a transmission issue with some 02-03's, as I said before. I think it had to do with the syncros. Unfortunately, it's not something we can easily diagnose over the internet, so you're going to have to have a mechanic take a look at it.

Still strange. Any grinding? Check the transmission fluid.

Makes sense. Check TSB's and such for your vehicle. This was a known issue. Nissan may owe you a transmission.
