I am trying to gather as much info on this job before I dive into it. I have a "Haynes Repair Manual" that is pretty clear but I 'm not sure removing some of the parts are necessary. It does say if you're careful, you can unbolt sprockets from camshafts and support them with pieces of wire, making it unnecessary to completely remove the timing chain. Will I be able to lift off the head with the sprockets and chain left in place? Will that save me from removing the front cover and oil pump? Are there any other things I should be aware of before I start?

There are 70,000 miles on the car now but the problem started at about 60,000 miles. Hard starts, loosing coolant, found coolant in #1 cylinder. Added some radiator seal which stopped symtoms. I have the time to take care of this properly right now. I think it might have overheated when the coolant ran low (my wife asked why the check engine light has been on for 2 days). So pulling head to get it tested.

Finished replacing head gasket, it was bad. It had a break between the #2 and #3 cylinder and signs of coolant leaking from water jackets. Had head pressure tested... OK. Then milled. My main concern was keeping the timing chain from dropping off the crankshaft spocket. I wanted to avoid removing the lower front cover. I held the chain up with string tied up to the hood and wire ties to chain guides then wedged with wood shims. I lined up the marks I made on the chain and the two crankshaft sprockets, then installed everything else. I have to admit, I said a quick prayer before turning the key but it started right up! Runs great.
