Just bought a 2002 Qx4 yesterday (I drive a 1995 Classic Range Rover and wanted to experiance some Japanese engineering), seems like a really good vehicle. It has 171000km paid $10500.00 canadian. I think was a good deal, it is a premium edition, with cieling mounted dvd, fully loaded. My question is about rust around the window frames (front and rear doors) the rubber is bubbling with what I suppose is rust underneath. Is this normal for there trucks, seems strange for a 2002. The rest od the truck has no rust and is in really nice shape.

No they shouldnt rust.... The earlier pathfinders (95 and earlier) had rust/rot issues on the frame, that was eliminated in 1996 with the new unibody structure.... But then again, being in Canada, if they salt your roads, rust can happen on almost any car driven in the winter... Is it bubbling up on the trim itself, or on the paint around the trim? Congratulations on your purchase, by the way. It's a very reliable, capable, and comfortable SUV.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to NICO!!Shouldn't have any rust . . I live in an area where we salt the roads as well, and my QX has no rust. The QX spent the first 51k miles and 7 years of its life in Chicago, which has a bit rougher conditions than where I live (Indiana).

I think it's easy to pull the rubber off the window frame, if you want to see what is underneath.

I'm 2 hours away from you in Ottawa, and I have a 2002 Pathfinder with 170,000Kms. Guess what? Mine is doing the exact same thing, both front and back door windows, along the bottom more than the top. This is the price we pay for living here. I don't think there is a whole lot we can do about it. FYI: I oil spray my truck once a year, and there is no other rust. The stuff under the window trim is all the rust I have. The only other corrosion that I have is my OEM aluminum rims are starting to peel a little. Again, I don't think there is a solution for that.I still love the truck though. I hope to have it for many more years.

Thanks for all the quick responses, I guess I will just remove the bottom window trim and replace it (wonder if there is any warranty on this item) also what do you all think of the price paid $10,500 is it a decent deal for this vehicle? thanks again..

10 500 is a great price i think, its very cheap especially for a qx4 but i as far as i know they all rust around the window there is a strip of metal on the inside of the molding that is not completely enclosed, meaning its exposed and that y they rust the are $125 each at the dealer if u buy all 4 ask for the 15% off. i got new ones for midwaypartsteam in the states with shipping and every think just over $400 cdn including a 82 brokeage fee from fed ex buy the way if you do remove that strip more than likely you are going to have to replace it so leave until u get the new ones you just pull it off with the window down and vise-vesa

those mouldings are very common to rust. My dad had a 93 pathy, they rusted,my brother has a 97 pathy, they rusted which he actually just replaced about $100 a piece from the dealer. Luckily my 03 hasn't shown any signs of rust. I don't think there is warranty on these, I think they use to be covered in the mid 90's though.Congrats on the qx4, I think you got a good deal as long as its in good shape and taken care of. I paid $14500 on a 2003 pathfinder chilkoot 93000KM

My pathfinder has rust in the same spots on the mouldings. I'm from Winnipeg so I suspect its the salt.

I truly believe there is no reason for these rubber covered moldings to rust especially on a 2002. I think we shouls start a list of people with this problem and demand that Infinity change the pieces in question under the rust proof warranty.

mine has SOME bubbling on the rear windows, not on the paint though. I also have some rusting on the front fender where it connects to th bumper.....just letting you all know, that ugly blue streak you see that runs down afterwards and eats into your paint.....if you wax with a electric polisher it gets rid of it if its not too deep in yet. Did wonders on my truck yesterday.

Also theres such a thing as electronic rustproofing, Im not sure how GOOD it is, canadian tire has a kit for $350 or sumthing. The technology works by impressing a small current throughout the whole car reversing the effects of oxidization. Im sure an oil spray is probably safer, but this unfortunately doesnt protect against body rust...

my dads land rover has the kit, works good so far. Just have to change the battery every few years. You may want to look into somehting like this before investing hundreds of dollars on body work and parts which in a few years will rust again.

Update on my '02 Pathy.:The window trim was rusting really bad, on all 4 windows, so I ordered new trim pieces from Courtesyparts.com. I had them shipped to some friends in Virginia, and picked them up a few weeks ago. Installed them this week. They are dead easy to replace. Thankfully there was no rust on the door skin under the trim at all. It was only the window trim that was rusting. Dealer price up here was in the $140.00/per range. Courtesy Parts was about $80.00 per strip. Truck looks good again. Well worth it, I think.

I finally got around to ordering the parts from Courtesyparts.com. Had them changed and voila, looks like new. By the way the truck is great, have had no problems with it. Recently did a major tune-up. It now has 210000km.
