Is it possible to replace the front ball joints on a 2002 qx4 4wd without removing the CV axle? I would prefer to not have to dissemble the brakes and wheel hub to get to the ball joint since that is just a big PITA. It looks like there might be enough room to squeeze out the ball joint under the axle.
Also, do I need any special tools to remove the ball joint? it looks like the 3 bolts and the grooved nut and it should just come out.

any tips would be greatly appreciated, and link to a YouTube video or online guide with pics would be awesome as well.

Thanks in advance for everything!

p.s. this site has helped me get my qx4 to 233,000 miles and counting!

Yes I did, and it says to remove axle. In the past I have been able to do a lot of jobs without removing all the recommended parts, just want to see if this is possible as well.

In this case yes, you must remove the axle. I don't remember the specifics of it, but I do recall trying to leave it in place and not having nearly enough clearance.

you can do it without axle removal, but you need to take out the axle locking ring and disconnect the lower control arm from the chassis . the axle need to move a little bit.
ive had success replacing them without disconnecting the lca , its a pia though :mike
