Is there a need to clean the a/c evaporator on my QX4 as a preventive measure, and if so, is this something a DIYer can do?

If you mean the evaporator which is right after the cabin air filter, you can remove the cabin filter and vacuum it out, but the presence of the cabin air filter generally keeps the evaporator free of leaves and other debris that has the potential to cause problems such as fires.

In WD21 and D21 Nissans, it is possible to remove the blower motor resistor to gain easy access to the evaporator core. This is what possibly could be hiding:
