My Q45 has 40,000 miles and has been pretty good to me. On and off I've been having starting problems. Turn the key and NADA. Firsr the AAA told me the battery was weak. Replaced that. Then I repalced the battery cables. It started great everytime for quite a while and then stopped. I read in the manual about the anti theft keys and started using the "extra" key as an experment. The I noticed that if I had NOT locked the car before getting in that it was not starting. I figured it was the locking- anti theft system with the key fob etc. If it would not start I would get out re lock the car then reopen the car and sit down. It worked almost everytime until recently. Now when I do the lock, unlock, lock, unlock it is still failing to start. I had a slight feeling today that it could be the ignition switch in the dash, the actual place where the key goes. An ideas men ???

Thanks, Joe in Palm Springs Ca.

I would take it to the dealer for check. There was a recall a while back - crank position sensor and in some case the VTC sensor.

They should still replaced by the dealer as they are TSBs.

Good luck.

To the DEALER it went. After lots of talk some tests were run and evidently there is a silanoid inside the starter motor which controls the electrical aspect of turning over the starter motor. This silonoid was defective and was spuraticly not engaging the motor. The entire starter motor was replaced. It was quoted to me as $1000.00 but actulay came in at $760.00 Hooray !!!! Only $760.00 !!!

Your pretty happy for getting ripped off. Unless you need the Consult 2 to install the starter too among other things.

Buzzkill...

Probably not a horrible price with CA labor rates for a part that lists at about $425 when you get a loaner car, etc.

Not sure why they didn't just replace the solenoid, but maybe they don't have good success taking starters apart.

Much easier and more lucrative for them to just replace the entire device.
