Just bought a 2002 Q45/premium - great car...!

The previous owner had the cassette deck removed, and installed an XM radio in its place. It's a very clean installation - looks factory. Problem is, it uses FM modulation rather than a hardwire, and I'm left with a TAPE button on the dash that does nothing.

My question is: does the 2002 Bose head unit have the ability to accept a satellite wiring harness, maybe through the use of an AUX input? If not, could I retrofit a newer Q45 head end unit into the '02 to better integrate the XM radio? (And it'd be nice to change that TAPE button to SAT...). Effectively, I would like to end up with an entertainment system that's available on the newer Q's.

Any suggestions? XM is nice, but I'd really like the fidelity of the digital signal that I'm paying for. The FM modulation sounds kinda like "airline audio."

Thanks!

to my knowledge and i've installed around 40 xm/sirius systems into vehicles if the vehicle does not come factory equipped with sattelite radio you have 2 choices the fm modulator hooked up to your factory head unit or a xm or sirius ready aftermarket unit. recently in a copy of car audio and electronics the march 2004 issue page 12 has an interface module that plugs inbetween the factory radio and the harness and it provides 2 aux imputs. Not sure it they make it for the 2002 Q45 heres a link to the companies webpage http://www.peripheralelectronics.com the interface model number is PXGM24 if it doesn't work they might have something else on their page that'll help you out

Wow!

Thanks, MECPInstaller!

I doubt that I would go to the expense of replacing my existing head unit with one of the newer XM-ready ones (if it would even fit). This is good stuff. At least there is a way to hardwire this in.

Any recommendations on installation shops who could do this kind of work? Here in Texas, we have BestBuy and CircuitCity, eahc having their own installers. I was holding out hope for another company here called Car Toys, but they didn't seem all that knowledgable when I grilled them.

Thanks again!

actually now that i think about it its not hard to do at all if they did make that adapter for your vehicle it plugs inbetween the radio and the facory harness you could most likely be able to do that yourself

Thanks - you've been great!

Looks like this is exactly what is in order. However, it doesn't look like they make a device for my car.

They seem to have a pretty limited selection of autos that they interface to - mostly GM products it looks like.

I've emailed them with my specifics, so maybe they can come up with something. I'll keep looking in the meantime.

Thanks again!-David

You can also check with this companyhttp://www.soundgate.com/produ...i.htmthis piece is for adding a alpine changer to the factory system, but frequently these types of adapters allow for and aux input in a two channel RCA style connector. Depending on the brand of xm recivier you have you might not have a audio output from the XM tuner. What kind do you have? Delphi, Alpine, Sony, or pioneer? Some of those brands do have RCA audio outputs. You might also check with blitzsafe, the make factory headunit adapters also.

It's a Pioneer GEX-FM903XM.

From what I've been able to find out, this model can be installed using "ADD ON Mode," or "IP BUS Moce." I'm guessing ADD ON is the FM modulated installation that I have. I don't know what IP Bus would do for me, or if I could even use it with the 2002 Q's Bose head unit...

I'll definitely check out the link you supplied. Please keep me in mind if you happen to run into additional info that might help me.

Thanks!

IP bus is for connecting to a pioneer head unit. Or you could connect to a factory BMW radio using peripheral adapter BMWPILX which would also allow for an aux input for another audio device such as an ipod, but that is of no help to you. I don’t know of any specific adapter for recent Infiniti cars. I think that there are finally adapters to connect Alpine changers to Nissan headunits from 1998 and up. But it is unlikely these will work with the factory Bose in your Q. Sorry!
