On the '02 Infiniti Q45 there is a rear camera that comes on when you put the car in reverse. I wanted to put this on a switch so I can turn it on anytime.

I have no clue where the wire is that controls this. Any ideas?

When you put the trans in reverse the TCM energizes the backup lamp relay. This signal goes to the camera control unit to turn on the camera. Being tied into the TCM you may not be able to operate independently.

So it sounds like you would have to splice a switch to the camera circuit between the relay and the camera. But you would also need a diode in there before the splice to prevent the backup lamps from lighting.

Just this week, with the help of some other Q45 owners and a guy that helped design the central control unit in the Q45, we found a secret menu in the center computer.

You can do all kinds of neat stuff. You can turn on the rear camera while driving and adjust it, perform a speaker test that lets you individually test each speaker in the car including the subwoofer (it also shows a diagram of where the speakers and amplifiers are, test the built in microphone that when tested turns the car into a PA system. There are a bunch of other cool things that I've yet to mess with, and those are just a few.

From day one, I wanted to find a way to turn on the rear camera while driving which I thought would be neat. There was no way to do this since everything is controlled by a computer bus and individual wires can't be tapped - ie. to add a swtich, but you can't.

There is no mention of this hidden area in the owners's manual and it's really cool. If you want more info I was going to take screenshots of the screens and post them on a Q board for some other owners, but can post here as well?

Can you describe the method to enter that mode? If you make a short write up, we can get it put on the Infiniti FAQ on the main page. You can email it to me or [email protected]
