When the car starts in the morning it gives grey smoke for a few seconds (2-3). The car has 98k miles (168k km) on it. Is it due to the oil consumption these engines do or is it something to worry about? Anyone else has noticed this.

Are you sure it is not steam (water vapor)?

If it disappears immediately and doesn't persist or smell, it probably is.

^points yeah..

Other concern would be oil burning off from "settling" in the night or running a bit to rich upon startup.

What would cause the engine to run rich initially could be a # of things, but it might be due to the cold engine needing to warm up and "seal up" to get to it's normal level of performance.

But these are stretches, above poster is the thing to check first.

Its not vapor. My friend was driving the car and I noticed the smoke when he started the car and again (for 2-3 seconds) when he switched from reverse to D.

I had the same problem, but when I changed my oil to Mobil Syn. The problem was resolved, I don't jave thet issue anymore and the oil consumption is gone.

A couple of suggestions:

1. Make sure the crankcase isn't overfilled.

2. Avoid heavy-throttle, high-RPM operation right before you put 'er to bed for the night.
