2002 pathfinder (Vg33E)

hi,
my 2002 pathfinder steering is very stiff !!, changed the steering pump a couple of time, works for a while then gets stiff again!!!!! please help!!!!

How is the power steering fluid's level, smell, and color?

thanks for the interest!!! what i have noticed in the past is that the power steering fluid kind of flows out from the container as if it's pumped backwards !!!! so it keeps leaking out from the lid of the container, requiring constant top up!!!! but i have not noticed anything particular with the smell!!

Where are you located? Most 2001 - 2004 Pathfinders should have the VQ35DE engine, not the VG33E.

Overflowing reservoir generally means overfilling or overheating. Does the fluid smell burnt? Is it red, brown, or black? What fluid did you use after replacing the P/S pump?

thanks !! the fluid is not smelling like it's burnt, the color is redish pink, which is the color of the original fluid (Seahorse ATF lubricant, Dexron 3D)

That fluid is suitable and sounds like it's in good condition.

Is there some O-ring leaking around the power steering fluid reservoir?

yes ! there's some leakage around the fluid reservoir!!

Based on this exploded parts diagram:



It seems that there may be sealing washers that are leaking. Perhaps you should bring your Pathfinder to the dealer or some independent mechanic to have them diagnose it? I am not terribly familiar with the steering piping set up.
