Hello,

My check engine light recently went on. I had it checked and was told it was the P0442 trouble code. I purchased a new OEM gas cap a few days ago thinking that that may be the problem. So far the check engine light is still on. If the gas cap was the problem will the light eventually go off on its own or do I need to have it reset? Any suggestions on what the next step should be to find the problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

It should go away by itself, but you may need to reset it. Anybody with an OBD II scanner can do it for you (think local parts store). I'd get it cleared before you try anything else.

Also look if you can see if you have any rust on the gas filler tube the P0442 states NISSAN EVAP Control System Leak Detected so if the gas cap was replaced and if you reset the codes and it comes back, then its gotta be coming from somwhere else. Since these filler tubes are known to "rust" it might be an area to look into ...

Thank you for your help. I had the smoke test done about a week ago which showed no leaks. My mechanic cleared and reset the codes. Coming home from work today, the check engine light came back on. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

All I can say is good luck fixing that code.
It's a beast to get rid of.
Mine's been throwing evap codes for years, and I've given up on it.
Even my Nissan tech at the dealership doesn't recommend chasing it down.Too expensive. My truck runs fine BTW.
If you are looking for more input, search that code on this forum, as well as P0445.
There are a ton of threads on this subject on here. None of them with hard fast solutions, unfortunately.
