Hello all,I am new to this site but am already a big fan. I own 2002 Pathfinder SE 4x4 with 75,000 miles on it and have been having a few issues with it off late. I hope someone can help.

1. Engine oil level becomes low without obvious leaking. To me, this implies the engine may be burning oil. I estimate it to be approximately one quart every 1000 miles. Exhaust smoke is whitish and moderate in amount.

2. SES light is back on after reset for what was believed to be low oil. At this time, scan revealed a P 1145 code. I read Mr. Scott's thread on P 1145 and the benefits of using Consult II.

Questions that I have are as follows:1. How serious are these problems?2. How much should I expect in repair costs?3. Is it better to let the dealer take care of these issues?4. I recently purchased an extended warranty. Given this, would be be recommended to go to the dealer instead of DIY?5. How long can I leave these issues unattended, as I just purchased the warranty and would not want them to get suspicious that I am making a claim right after purchase.6. How did these issues come about? Does NY winter have anything to do with it?

I have downloaded the service manuals from Nissanhelp.com and can follow them, however, I am not a mechanic and free time is rather limited for me.

I appreciate any and all comments to assist me in this matter.

Thank you all.

Samir

WOW "MR"...lol My dad was MR.

If you have a nissan extended warranty I believe these items MAY be covered. At this point It might be best to at least let a dealer take a look at it. They will give you an estimate on initial inspection but if what they find is covered by your contract you will be only responsable for the deductable of each repair. Deductable depends on your contract level. If you supplied me with a vin I can run it on Nissan DCS and tell you what level you have and the deductable amount.

I will tell you I personally havent seen any pathfinders burning oil but have seen several with leaks , primarily from the rear main seal. If you were burning it it would be blueish smoke not white. Faint white is usually excess fuel or condensation in the exhuast system, thick nontransparent white smoke is usually coolant.

As far as your code goes if you have had extreamly low oil at one point in time the oil may have sludged up in your solonoids that control intake cam advance( VTC sproket ports). A little trick that sometime works is to run 0w-40 synthetic for a couple thousand miles and see if your light goes out. The thinner synthetic oil helps wash out the sledge in the solonoid passages if the build up isnt to bad. But as you read in my other post it reallys helps to have a consult to evaluate weather its sensor signal loss or lack of cam advance.

If the oil treatment does not clean out the sledge you may be at the point of replacement of the solonoid.

wow nistech, i have read a few of your replies and i must say you know your product. i live in md and have seen this concern of low oil level in 3.5l engine path's. this motor if not maintained with regular oil changes have produced sludge only in the timing case. i have not seen them burn excessive amounts of oil. i hav seen to little oil put in when changing it and also the use of low quality oil casing this concern.

best bet is to do as nistech said and have a dealer look at it. if they remove the vtc sensor to inspect it they may find you have sludge or not. if there is sludge and you are consuming more than 1qt oil per 3000 miles it is probaly time for and engine. another external leak to check for is the oil cooler o-rings. you may not see the oil cooler if the skid plate is installed. remove the skid plate and look on the pass side of the engine near the axle for a leak.

Just seein a few problems. If you get one that throws HB codes for "reactor temp sensor short to ground" in combination with "MG motor cooling system" look for the hybrid cooling system electric pump to be unplugged near the left lower corner of the engine bay[easily reached from under car just above the subframe] Also if these cars arent started at least once a week the 12volt battery will go completely dead and be destroyed.

Thank you Scott.

The extended warranty I have is from a Interstate and not Nissan. I will try the oil trick first and then go to the dealer as that gives it time so that the Interstate doesn't think that this was a preexisting problem.

Thanks once again.

Samir
