passed the california sniffer just fine but when the smog tech did his visual inspection, he seemed to have issues w/ the catalytic converters(directly beneath the front seats) which according to their smog check manual should have 4 cats in total(primary and secondary) so smog failed visual.
i was a bit surprised as the secondary cats he was referring to, to my understanding are resonators. about 8 months ago, this pair which appeared to be resonators to me were replaced at the muffler shop due to leaks.
i attempted to pull some part diagrams for the exhaust and all diagrams suggest this pair is an exhaust/non emission component(not cats).
can someone confirm if my suspicion is correct? is it possible that ca cars exclusively have 4 total cats?
the part in question is 200(nissanusa.com has this part description as a muffler and tube) in the diagram below. i made a follow-up call w/ the smog shop explaining my concern that my car was a false visual fail. he was open to listening to my case if i brought official documentation from the dealership. i also looked into the ARB carb EO numbers for aftermarket cats for a 2002 pathfinder and their part list also shows 4 cats. believe this is the same false info that is being propagated through ARB and smog.
does anyone have clearer part diagrams showing the exhaust along w/ a part list description?
the last thing id want to do is spend $500 on replacement cats for original parts that were resonators.

yet another diagram:
part 5 description is right and left converter which is part of front pipe 6) Product Code: 200105W510-186479-361182. this would suggest that the part is a catalytic converter. i am hoping someone can confirm what this part is as im reading conflicting info on the forum on some calling this a resonator.

This parts site shows the location of the pre-cats on our vehicles.

The parts you are asking about are indeed resonators. There was a dealer bulletin on those - they would split the side seams while still under warranty.

Surf over to Rockauto and look at the cats for your vehicle - they are all like part 4 in the one diagram you posted ( Only 2 are OK for California). If you then go to resonators, you will see your part. Walker appears to be the only aftermarket manufacturer left.

There have been a very few vehicles with 4 cats, almost all have 2. And they all have an O2 sensor in front and back to monitor emissions and cat performance so they can tell the computer if something is wrong. No OBDII vehicles (like yours) have "passive" cats without O2 sensors.

Looks like you will have to try and talk this shop into passing your vehicle - maybe he will believe Rockauto - if not, I guess maybe the dealer will inspect and pass the vehicle.

does anyone have the detailed TSB description from what is used by the techs at the dealership ? the sites i look up have a generic explanation as exhaust tube leak. would be good to have some verbiage that specifically describes the part as a resonator.

i will got to the dealership later this week to gather as much info as i can so i can convince this smog tech my car is perfectly legal. its a shame that ARB has propagated what appears to be an error in their smog inspection checks for our car.
