2002 Nissan Xterra AC

Hello I am new to this board. I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra and today the AC went out. Over the past several weeks I have heard a loud thud when I turned the AC on and a slight rattle after that. Up until now I have not had any problems with the AC, I have never had it filled ect. Does this sound like the compressor clutch?? Is there any way to test the clutch or other parts (ie sensors or switches). I don’t think it is the Freon level because it has always worked well and was very cold. Thanks in advance for any help!!! The AC started working today. I don’t have any idea why. It still thuds when you turn it on. Do you all hear a thud when you turn your air on? What could that be? Thanks David

It should not have any sound at all except for the air after turning it on. The clutch or the A/C itself. Try cleaning it out.
