I just bought a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5 cylinder and when I bought it the guy said it needed a pcv valve. SO, today I changed it out and went ahead and put new spark plugs on it. When I went to take the fourth spark plug off (the fourth from the left) the cylinder was filled up with oil. I cleaned it out and put the new spark plug in. After I did this I cranked it up and it was smoking out of the exhaust. I went ahead and changed the oil and filter and when I cranked it up after it was smoking pretty bad. What should my next step be? The car wasnt smoking until I changed plugs and put new pcv valve. The car has 143,xxx miles on it. Any help is appreciated
Thanks,
Josh

The seal on the valve cover is not keeping oil out of the spark plug well.
Is the smoking continuing?
If the oil was from what came into the cylinder while you had the plug out, it should stop pretty quickly.
The valve cover gasket may also seal a PCV passage on that engine, I cant remember offhand. Have a look.
Make sure you got the right PCV valve in there too. They don't go bad much.
The fact that the guy said it needed a PCV valve has me worried because a lot of 2002's had ring problems.
I would do a good compression test regardless.

Thank you for your reply. It is smoking pretty bad. As soon as you crank it up the smoke just pours out. I just dont understand because it wasnt smoking until I put a PCV valve into it. I am bringing it to a mechanic on August 1 to get it looked at.
