I am looking for some information about my car which I recently bought:

1. The first question is about the stereo system (Bose) it is lacking in base and full loud sound. The speaker in the rear (under the rear window) is not putting out any sound...when i look in the trunk there is another box besides the speaker box; is this an amp dedicated to that speaker? All the visible wiring appears to be connected so what could the problem be? All the other speakers work fine. Could the amp have gone out on that speaker? Would that mean the speaker is bad too? Can I replace just the amp and for how much?

Question #2 the car is a little rough or delayed in shifting early in the morning especially the shift between 25-35 mph; is this common for this model or should I be worried about the transmission?

thanks in advance for any comments/advice you may have.

Welcome to NICO

1) the "box to the right of the sub" is the amp. It is the amp for the whole system, not just the sub. If the sub is not working then make sure the connections are firm and you may be able to test it with another speaker to determine if it's the amp or sub. If you want replacement parts then you may find something on ebay or post in the NICO WTB classifieds section after you have 10 posts.

2) Are you getting any SES codes? Have you had a tuneup or other maintenance lately?

Thats so cool that you responded! and with what seems like useful advise. Good to know it is the amp for the wholde system....so since all my other speakers work and the trunk CD changer,in dash CD player etc all work (I will say the whole system is lacking base even when I adjust for more) does that mean the amp in the trunk is good? I like the idea of testing a known working speaker to see what happens. Thx

2. I have only owned it for 2 months bought it at an auction so the maint history is not avail. I have changed the oil and transmission fluid and filter. It actually seemed like it started doing that after the transmission fluid change...I checked the manual and am pretty sure the right fluid was used. When I first got it the "Service engine Soon light was coming on and off, someone told me to use higher octane gas and I did. Since then the light has not come on again. ???? what kind of reputation do the transmissions in these cars have?

The Bose system does not have that much bass as it is and you will notice more bass when the system is lower and less as you turn it up.

Now, you mention that you have a trunk-mount CD changer? The 2002 I35 should have a internal 6-CD changer in the dash as part of the Bose headunit.

While I don't have a I35, the 2002 Maxima is relatively the same car. I have 140k on the transmission and other than it occasionally slipping from time to time and being slow to shift I have not had any major problems with it. Usually Nissan will switch you to synthetic transmission fluid as well so you may want to give that a try. As far as the SES light I would suggest going to a local auto store and have them pull codes to see if any are stored in the system as that would tell you what problem it was seeing. If you are having it shift way to firm at times then it could be a Throttle Position Switch issue.

Do you have navigation? That's the only way an I35 comes with a trunk CD changer. Otherwise it's either aftermarket or you have an I30.

I forgot about the Nav setup with the CD changer in the trunk (I just have regular Bose).

Hey thanks for all the info. I do have the navigations so there is a single in Dash CD plus radio and all that and then the changer in the trunk. I don't have the CD for the Navi and it sounds like the maker isn't putting out anything up to date so too bad I would prefer the changer in the dash...Anyway all your comments are very helpful and informative...Good to know the system is not too base(y) to start with and my shifting does what a little more like what you describe slip and slow. I will see about the synthetic fluid.

So... since you all seem to know your stuff any advice on getting a spare key (programed and w/chip) that doesn't cost $185. thats the price the dealership quoted me.
