2002 I35 auto stuck in neutral

The car had altenator go out while driving and finally battery gave out.
Had to have car towed home. Tow truck driver used jump box to start and drive it on roll-back and put in park took key out.
To unload he put key in ignition turned it and put car in neutral coasted car off.
He tried to put shifter back in park but it would not move out of neutral. We tried using the shifter unlock with no sucess.
Any ideas?
We had put new battery in and still no luck.

No I didn't.
The owners father kept pushing lock release and hit shifter pretty good and it came free.
I did not want apply that much force and break something. Shifts fine now.
