The auto trans in my 1999.5 2wd pathy has failed at 160K miles. I found and purchased a 2002 pathy trans with 50K miles. However, when I got it home I found a problem. My original driveshaft is splined and goes into the tail of the transmission. The 02 trans has a flat flange. It seems that the exchange systems say they are swappable. I looked up the drive shaft (propeller shaft) part numbers for the pathfinder and could not get much intelligence from that. I did see that the flange on the rear differential seemed to have changed in the 01-02 timeframe.
Does anyone know or have experience with swapping the front half of the drive shaft from a 01-02 with the front half of the 99.5 and if fitting correctly?
Also, will the trans bolt up to the engine properly?
Thanks,
Lee

If I am understanding correctly, what you need to do is pull the tailshaft assembly off of both transmissions and use the original from your vehicle on the new transmission.
If you go to ebay you should be able to find a picture of a transfer case showing the front of it where it bolts up to the transmission. The front of your tailshaft housing will be the same where it bolts to the transmission.
The tailshaft housing is essentially a big spacer that takes the place of the transfer case in a 4wd.
