Anyone have a strange noise from the engine compartment when:

1. The car is in reverse2. The car is idling (such as at a red light)

Yet the sound goes away when the trans is in neutral or park, and when the a/c is turned off. The sound is similar to a slipping belt (only when in reverse), and it sounds like a groan when idling. Perhaps the a/c compressor?

I was told by a friend that the a/c has a clutch that can go out. Yours could be slowly getting stuck.

What about when the car is being driven? Do you hear it then?

I would have a friend get in the car and put it in drive, but hold the brake down (red light situation) and have the hood popped to see what's going on.

Have an o4 with 28m on it. I get a tic from what I thought was the timing chain guides and tightners. Was told it is the injectors made by Bosch, german and their noisy. also, have you ever changed your transmission fluid? Note don't go to the quick fills and have them flush your system. they will damage your transmission. The power flush damages a part in the transmission. the best way is to unscrew your transmission drain plug and let it drain. add the same amount or add until it is hot and at the full mark only. don't over fill. do this every oil change it will take about 3 times untill the oil is almost fully changed. By the way is the fluid dark and smells like burnt toast, if so you go problems.Let me know what it was and or if this helps

I have a 2002 Alima that recently began having the same issues you described as far as the A/C on and in reverse. What was the outcome for yours?

Thanks for the help
