Hello all,

I'm not new here but I mostly lurk and suck up info. I've never needed to join because searching has always resulted in my problem being fixed and I've never been able to answer anything that has been asked ... Until Now.
Working on a 2001 Max

I got the dreaded 505 code a few months ago and since this is now a third car it was put on the back burner and parked. It was also eating coils at a rate I was tired of paying for (not knowing that was part of the computer problem) ... but my daughter has gotten her license now and we need the car so I sent the computer in to a guy on Ebay and he replaced the chip. I also replaced the TPS and the IACV before the computer was re-installed. Car cranked up fine (rough) after 6 mths of sitting that was expected but it settled down and did well. I then attempted to adjust the TPS using the information in the Service Manual using the pin ID on EC 179 and the procedure on EC 116-118

First problem, the TPS isn't even close to having enough adjustment to compensate for the amount of movement the switch has to turn to adjust it the way the manual describes... The meter shows no conductivity across pin 4 and pin 5 until the throttle body valve is somewhere around 1/2 open. I actually removed the TPS so I could verify everything was correct and tested it while holding it in my hand and turning the "rotor" ! So did I get a bad TPS or did I miss something I was supposed to do?

Problem two. this car has a IDLE SPEED CONTROL-FI POT (Nissan Part No.: 16182-2Y011) which kept me from even trying to adjust the TPS so I adjusted the pin far enough out so it was not interfering with the throttle plate assuming it would not be a big deal to adjust it using the service manual....
WRONG I cant find the IDLE SPEED CONTROL-FI POT in the service manual other than a reference to a name change in basic info section. Neither can I find much on the Inet referring to it..... can anyone point me to a place that tells how to adjust it so when I do get to that point I can?

Thanks a lot

Larry

Ok, is the Service manual wrong?

Should I be using Pin 5 and Pin 6 ?
Pin 5 and 6 are the CLOSED position for the throttle.... Pins 4 and 5 are the WOT for the switch
looking at Pins 5 and 6 it is possible to accomplish this... using Pins 4 and 5 the goal is impossible because the switch starts out open and closes (NO Switch)
No conductivity then conductivity.....

“Continuity should exist” while inserting 0.05 mm (0.0020 in) feeler gauge.
“Continuity should not exist” while inserting 0.15 mm (0.0059 in) feeler gauge

That's not possible with a NO Switch.... you simply cant get conductivity through an open terminal

im gonna go with the book being wrong and use pins 5 and 6

Just went and looked at the pics on the terminals in the FSM .... they are different from one pic to the next. I "ASSUME"
the pic on EC 179 vs the pic on EC 116 with the terminal "lock" as a reference the pins are reversed.... Im guessing thats a FU in the service manual.

PLEASE let me know if I am wrong.

Larry

I'm glad you asked. Yes, your service manual may be wrong. There is a Technical Service Bulletin NTB99-053b that discusses the revised TPS adjustment procedure. I don't know how to find it on our forums, but here is a link to it on the internet.

Welcome to the forums! I lurked for a long time also. Searches are easier with an account and it's fun to join in the conversation or to help others with your personal wisdom sometimes. Glad to have you aboard :wavey:

Doh, I just looked at the listed years and it's older than yours by a year or so. It may be worth trying anyway. I used it on my 240sx. It's easy because you just set the on - off side of things instead of reading the ohms or volts on the other side. That part is useful for diagnoses of the tps if you have odd throttle behavior. I din't use a feeler gauge, just had the continuity off, pedal up, twist the tps by hand until there was continuity, then tighten it. Somewhere around wot I think you would get continuity again on the other side. Then start the car and test it. You might have to adjust the idle a hair again.
