I'm actually trying to get some info for my nephews 2001 QX4 4x4 SUV. He recently bought it used and seems he is paying the price for not knowing anything about cars. Recently he lost 3rd and 4th gear - it will not go into these gears and he has a check engine light issue as well. He said he took it in to a mechanic and they told him that it had something to do with the torque convertor (not actually sure what the code is - perhaps someone here might know if a "torque convertor" issue triggers a code).

Anyways, I recommended a transmission shop and he took it in and they inspected it and indicated that 3rd and 4th gear were stripped out. However, when I asked my nephew if they pulled the pan and said anything about debris being in the pan he indicated that they said nothing. His fluid is normal (not burnt), however when he first got it, it might have been about 4 quarts low - at least that is what some shade tree mechanic told him (he actually never saw them put the fluid in and the "mechanic" was associated with the person who sold him the SUV).

So to make a long story short I suggested that he buy a reman'd transmission and that I would install it for him - no biggy. Yet, I started to think that perhaps the transmission gears might not be the problem especially with no debris in the pan - do these trannys go into "limp mode", if so why - sensor issue? Just trying to figure things out before I invest my time and his money into this project. Sorry that I could not offer more info, as I have not really looked at the situation myself - he lives and works across town, and I rarely see him. Thoughts? Thanks!

EDIT - I just talked to him and I should be able to get the error codes a little later... in the mean time, thoughts??

I recently blew my torque converter and it didnt throw any codes. It just made a terrible grinding noise when idling and it ceased when the truck got moving. Right now I have my transmission and transfer case sitting on my garage floor. Waiting for the new converter to come in...

I know the "limp home" mode is due to an electrical failure which throws the transmission into 3rd gear (according to the FSM).

Thanks! As far as I understand, is that the vehicle will NOT shift into anything above second. So maybe it is the transmission...

As a side, I have never taken a transmission out of an Infiniti - is it a PIA? How long did it take you?

The automatic transmission (this is an auto, right?) will throw codes for some stuff. Get down toyou local PepBoys or what ever and get them to read out the code. Report thenumeric code back here (they are notorius for giving the wrong meaning toNissan codes, esp above P1000, which is model-specific).

Before I pulled the trany I'd drop the pan and see what's in it.

And before that, I'd check the fluid level.

maybe the valve body if there is nothing in the fluid sounds kinda weird to me

i would hold off on getting a new transmission until you get the codes. Since the pan is clean, it maybe a valve or solenoid that has gone bad.

Droppin the trans is a pain, you have to remove a bunch of parts (complete exhaust system, front and rear drive shafts, drain trans and transfer case, ect), the top transmission bolts are a pain due to the lack of space. I used 3 wobble bars and a universal joint. Also, the trans/tansfer case (assuming 4x4 q) is quite long, so i had to use 2 floor jacks to properly support it. The most time consuming parts is removing the rusted exhaust nuts. It probably took me 10 hrs to do (my first infiniti trans drop)
