2001 QX4 liftgate lock will not open electronically

Has anyone had the problem where the liftgate will not unlock electroncally? The lock works fine with the key but it will not open when the car is unlocked with the keyless or the door buttons. Someone told me it might be the acuator but I'm not even sure where to begin to dismantle the door to access it. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
