I just purchased a 2001 QX4...Solid SUV, very smooth ride even for its age. Only problem is when accelerating hard from a stop there is a slight bang sound and a a hard bang feel coming from the back area. Same bang can be felt when breaking hard. Feels like the cabin has too much free play and is sliding around at the back. What could this be? Thanks

Rear control arm bushings, more than likely.

Just want to update since I solved this problem. It wasn't the control arm bushings, as the shop told me it was replaced recently by the previous owner. So I went back to researching the problem. Greasing up the drive shaft slip yoke, solved the problem. The below thread, goes in more detail on how to diagnose and solve the problem:

Interesting. I am not sure how lack of grease there would cause this issue, but thanks for letting us know.

I guess, that area is loose and by putting a thick grease, it cushions it. This seems to be common issue in the GMC Sierra cars from looking online and some Ford trucks. I am guessing drive shaft will need to be replaced for a permanent long lasting solution.

You should be greasing the driveshaft at least once every oil change. I usually put in 5 pumps' worth.
