2001 qx4 cruise control issue

I've checked the FSM troubleshooting and this issue doesn't seem to match their chart. Basically, the other day I was on the highway and I wanted to use my cruise control. I activated the cruise control from the steering column and the dash light came on "CRUISE ON". Then I depressed the "set" button but the cruise control would not engage. Unless I'm reading the FSM manual wrong, I am not seeing this issue and I am at a loss for what the specific problem could be. I've tried searching for solutions, and some say that it might be a bad switch while others suggest a loose connection underneath the steering column above the brake. I have checked the three associated fuses and they are all fine. Before I start buying parts, has anyone had this issue and figured out how to resolve it? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. You have to hold the set button a few seconds for it to engage, sorry if that sounds stupid but I got the impression you may just be tapping it and releasing

Not stupid at all. But I did try that. No response whatsoever. Tried for two hours while I was on the highway.

Looking at the FSM (EL-230), I think the second line " SET indicator does not blink" probably applies - I think it is implied that if your Cruise light comes on, you got past step one.

I would try the 3 checks they have marked for that step.

Quick edit: your vehicle speed sensor is probably ok if the speedo works, looks like you may be down to the brake / stop switch or the cruise switch, or of course the spiral wire / bad connection thing.

I think it's been so long since I've used cruise control that I forgot that there was a "SET" indicator light. I'll try those 3 checks. Thanks!!
