2001 QX4 - Backup Bulb Replacement

Does anyone know how to access the compartment for the right side backup bulb? The illustration in the owner's manual is useless! I've removed the two screws holding the right license plate bulb cover, but I don't see any access point to get to the backup bulb. Any advice would be much appreciated - thanks.
