2001 QX4 4WD - How do you remove the front driveshaft spindle needle bearing? I tried a small punch / chisel from the opposite outside end of the spindle through the driveshaft tube. I could catch the edge of the needle bearing but not enough to get it to move before it would slip off.

Thx for bump!

I was able to determine that a small 3-jaw Pilot Bearing puller can be used. I bought one at Harbor Freight Item #4876 for $16.99. It made need some minor modification to the end of the jaws to grab the bearing but I think it will work. I'll find out tonight if will work or not.

Snap has a 2-Jaw Puller, P/N A78 which you can find on eBay but it is expensive used @ $70-$90. Advance Auto Parts has a similar one (Powerbuilt Tools Kit 08 Pilot Bearing Puller) for $29.99

It's really relatively easy to work on the front suspension components. Air tools (e.g. impact wrench, impact ratchet) definitely make the work easier. I like working on cars and definitely saving big $$'s on doing the work myself. :)

If you have dexterity in your hands try a fine jeweler's type pick. Reverse jaw puller, small puller as used in lock-smithy.

Can you describe in detail what you are working on, part, area and kind of area you are working in.

Can you remove the component part to work on the specific part in comfort.

As much detail as possible please

I'm working on the front spindles. Go to the NICOclub.com online shop manual (Front Axle > Wheel Hub and Rotor Disc > page AX-6 and reference the exploded diagram. On the lower right you will see an exploded view of the back-side of the spindle which shows the needle bearing.

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/QX4/2001%20 ... 20Axle.pdf

On the back side of the spindle is a needle bearing which the front drive shafts spins on. The needle bearing is pressed into the spindle. A jewelers pick will not work. I need a way to remove / replace the pressed in needle bearings with new ones that I purchased. No need to remove as there is plenty of room to access the spindle and needle bearig while installed on the vehicle.

Other 4WD makes / models are similar and from other forums I've determined that you can either grunt it out with chisels or you can try to use the puller I described.
