It seems that my swirl control valve actual does not automatically open when my 2001 Pathfinder (A/T) reaches for than 3600 RPM like it is supposed to.

I started by lubricating and freeing the actuator itself after reading other people with a similar issue and I can manually move the actualtor freely to the open and closed position with no significant resistance which I am not sure it is supposed to do. I am not sure if there is a spring that is supposed to hold it in the open position. The FSM provides no detail on this.

I applied direct power to the solenoid itself and the actuator does shut from the open position but what is it that makes it open? What is making it stay shut?

The other thing is that after I manully lift the actuator in the open position the vehicle does not always shut it and it maintains its power. But then sometimes it goes shut.

I can not seem to figure this out and I really could use some help on where to go next with this besides the dealership. :ohno:

Thanks in advance!

There is a vacuum hose going from the intake to a small vacuum box on the top front on the engine. Take that line off and either replace it, or give it a shot of compressed air to make sure debris hasnt clogged it.

My car was doing this, I replaced the hose, got my power back. There was white grit type crap in mine when I blew out the line so I just replaced it. Common problem (debris in that line) when I was doing my research.

Try there first

Hi,

Thanks for your response. I have been checking and blowing several lines but I am not sure which one specifically you are referring to that can double check.

Can you point it out on this pic?

What diameter hose should I be looking at? Is there a name for the part that it comes from or connects to???

Your help is appreciated.

Does anyone also know if the actuator is supposed to be in the open or closed position when the vehicle is turned off? When does the actuator decide to close

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

This system has a swirl control valve in the intake passage of each cylinder.

When idling and during low engine operation, the swirl control valve closes. Thus the velocity of the air in the intake passage increases, promoting the vaporization of the fuel and producing a swirl in the combustion chamber.

Also, except when idling and during low speed operation, this system opens the SWC. In this condition, the system tends to increase power by improving intake efficiency via reduction of intake flow resistance, intake flow.

The solenoid valve controls swirl control valve's shut/open condition. This solenoid valve is operated by the ECM.

The swirl control valve control solenoid valve responds to signals from the ECM. When the ECM sends an ON (ground) signal, the swirl control valve closes. When ECM sends OFF, SCV opens.

That may help I will see if I can find anything else.

Thanks for the fsm referencem however, I am not still not completely certain on why my actuator shuts and does not open. I did receive a response on another forum See http://npora.ipbhost.com/index.php?s=fa ... opic=30487 About the 4th post down is where I think my next investigation is taking me next.

This does not look like an easy problem to fix. Hopefully, I can figure this out with the help of others on this board and make a contribution of info here.
