I have a 2001 Pathfinder with 98,000 miles. the previous owner didn't change the oil regularly and I have been battling sludge problems for 2 years. The variable valve timing sensor code and an O2 sensor code has tripped my CEL. I have replaced the VVT sensor in the past only to have it gum up again and go bad. Is there any way to manually reset the CEL? I continually clean the sludge and oil pan and have been making some headway.

I would also like to know. I've replaced mass airflow sensor twice (VERY expensive at a dealership). Truck runs fine. But SES light won't go off. Two dealerships just say "twist your gas cap on tighter". Yeah. Another person says to make sure I'm not using a silicone-based air filter. OK. another person says that I might have a transmission fluid leak that is messing up sensors. Nope.

Dealer resets light. Says vehicle is fine, just use 93 octane. SES light was back on within two days.

Basically I just want the light to go off. Otherwise I will never be able to sell this car and my family won't feel safe in it.

I'm pretty sure theres no way to manually reset the SES light but then again I could be wrong. The disconnecting the battery trick didn't seem to work on my 02 Pathy. The only way i got mine off was with my dad's scanner, its and AutoXray http://www.autoxray.com/produc...id=33.

Bestdefense: I would say get your truck scanned by someone to really figure out why your SES light is on. Autozone is free, then you can figure out whats wrong.

.
I found a way to reset my 2002 manually. Very similar to 2002 Maxima, and I found it on the maxima forum.

With Car off, release gas pedal completely

Turn Key to ignition position for 3 seconds, do not start,

Press gas pedal to the floor and release 5 times in 5 seconds

wait 7 seconds, then press gas pedal to the floor for 10 seconds.

When SES light starts flashing release gas pedal

Press and hold the gas pedal all the way to the floor for more than 10 seconds

When the SES light flashing again, release the gas pedal

The SES should flash 10 times, pause, flash 10 times, pause, flash 10 times and pause and flash 10 times.

Turn the ignition off

Wait 3 seconds and start the car.

Good luck

I tried this one but it didn't work. I also found a similar one, but different for a 2000 that also did not work. Anybody know how to manually reset a 2001 Pathfinder?

Yeah I forgot about the magic vodoo method of pushing pedals and what not. Thats the way the manual says to do it if you dont have a scanner. I tried it on my Pathy and just got fed up and just delt with the light till I got my Dad's scanner. The problem with that method is you have to do it perfectly. So if you push the gas pedal 5 times in 4 seconds intead of 5 it won't work.

I did the disconnect battery trick and left it overnight. In the morning the CEL was out. (I also had cleaned out the sensor that caused the code, and the light did not come back on...)

Yea, i disconnected the battery overnight and it reset the ses as well. However, it sounds like you have a situation where your light will come on again anyway. I think you need to find the code that the light is sending out. Like someone else said, go to autozone and they will do it for free. Just get the code from them, do not listen to their explaination, because they are usually wrong. I was getting a P1140 and they were telling me it was mass air flow. I checked it out on the forum and found out it is right vtc sensor. Their explainations may be wrong, but at least they get the correct codes. Find the code and then check it out for yourself or post the code and I will look it up for you.
