Jumped in the Pathfinder this afternoon and got a bit of a scare going down the first hill from my house. The brake pedal normally has a spongey soft feel to it and is quite touchy when you tap the brakes. But now it feels very hard and wooden, you have to really stomp your foot down and it still doesn't stop very quickly.

Kind of feels like when you try to use the brakes with the engine off. Doesn't seem like ABS is working properly either. Any ideas what to look for here?

Perform the brake booster operating and airtight checks as described on page BR-19 of the factory service manual. Also inspect the vacuum hoses depicted on BR-21 for damage.

Seems to pass all of those operating and airtight checks. Can't see any hose damage either but i'll have to have a better look in the morning when it's brighter.

The check valve itself could also be failing. If you have a vacuum gauge, testing instructions are in the FSM.

Have you checked for stuck/seized caliper slide pins? If the vacuum tubing checks out OK, I would check those next. Does your parking brake work OK still?

Don't have a vacuum gauge so might need to take it in somewhere. Parking brake still works ok.
