Post

Hi,

I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier v6 2WD. I replaced the brake pads no problem but I am having a really big difficulty with the rotors. I removed the brake pads system. Removed the cap, under the cap there were two screws and I removed those. The problem is the fact that the is some sort of lug or nut. I cant find a way to remove that nut. I called a local place that replaces them and they told me that it shouldn't be too difficult. They told me all I had to do was remove the wheel floating hub and the rotor should come off easily. I then called Nissan and they told me its extremely easy. I guess for them it is. I tried asking them if there was some sort of special wrench to remove that nut but they told me there is none. The only thing that occurred to me was to take a flat head screwdriver and a hammer and loosen it that way. You can probably see why I decided not to follow that route. I have been all over google trying to see if there was something hat could help me. So far this seems the best place to ask. I am just trying to do it myself, want the experience. If anyone can help I would appreciate if I could get a detailed explanation of what I should do to get the process done and in layman's terms since I am new to this.

Thanks,

Z

I am confused. What nut? Nissan uses floating rotors on their brake systems (at least the few I have worked on). Floating rotors are just that, floating. They are held in place by the wheel and "float" inside the caliper and pads.

They're not floating rotors on an '01. You do have to remove the nut, and the correct tool is a spanner wrench, but your screwdriver method does work, as there shouldn't be a lot of preload on that nut. Theres an outer ring that's keyed outside the nut - the two screws you removed hold that on. A snap ring pliers is the best way to grab and slid that off to expose the big nut.

Once the nut is off, the whole rotor and both wheel bearings will come out. Put your hand over the center when you pull the rotor off because the outer bearing will probably come out and land in your lap otherwise, covering you in grease. Now is a good time to remove the inner wheel bearing and repack it with grease. Get new grease seals from your local parts store along with a grease seal removal tool - they're cheap. New seals tap in with a mallet.
