What Nissan recommends as a service for the automatic transmission is a complete system flush. And the dealer doesn't always need to be the one to go to for this.
There is a filtration machine (system) that is connected inline with your transmission's cooling lines and it circulates and filters 100% of the fluid. The nice thing about this type of service is it cycles the fluid in the torque convertor too. If you simply drop the pan you only get about 1/3 of the fluid changed.
transmission fluid can suffer from viscosity and thermal breakdown but todays fluids are engineered to take more abuse than ealier generations of fluids. But they don't last forever.
I had my Xterra done at 120,000km (72,000miles) and it runs and shifts fine. Prior to that it was shifting a bit hard between gears.
