my altima cuts off when i dont have my foot on the gas very silently, dont even know it happens sometimes till i look at the dash. it does this when i slow to a light also. today the check engine light finally came on after months of this issue.the codes indicated i needed either a map or maf sensor.i have read lots of people have had these sypmtoms with there altima's i dont wanna throw parts at it like some have after the code telling them they needed certain parts and they replaced them with no change in the cars performance...i kinda worried cause lots of people havent had any luck fixing their altimas including shops with the symptoms mine has. any advice would be very greatly appreciated.... thanks

That would be a mass airflow code. You can either swap the meter with someone you know to test it. Or you can test your meter with a volt meter. You would be checking the white wire.

I thought the code meant change the mass air flow sensor? Is the meter hard to change and is it expensive?

All engine codes mean that the ecm is not seeing the correct information from that circuit. That could be anything from a bad sensor, screwed up wiring,to a bad ECM. It is more common when a code is set that it is infact the sensor but not always the case.

It means your ecm had no clue how much fuel to give it since it couldnt see how much air was flowing in the engine. If you unplugged it and the car idled it means the ecm went into fail safe since the airflow meter circuit went completely open. If you had a bad ground circuit from the air flow meter it would do the same thing. So essentially didnt really diagnose anything. You just proved everything else appears to be working. But it still didnt isolate weather its a wiring failure or an airflow meter failure.

You can but if you have a wiring issue and not a bad airflow meter you will have wasted your money.

You would need a DVOM [multimeter, measures volts &ohms] You would then test the wires with it plugged in. Check for voltage at the wires. one should be 12volts,one should be less then .2volts and the otehr will register how much air is going in with a variable voltage signal I believe its between 1 ans 1.5 volts at idle. should go over 4 volts when you snap the throttle to wide open. Due to sample rates of volt meters that is a hard voltage to catch so you may need to do it a few times. If you dont see battery voltage or see more then .2v on the ground wire you will need to use the ohm meter function to find the problem with the wiring. Ohm tests are done with the Airflow meter and ecm unplugged.

probably getting loosened with vibration. Have you tried cleaning the connectors with electrical cleaner and then tightening down the female connectors with a small screwdriver?

How can i tighten it with a female connecter...no screws only screws are on the sensor it self,if i push the plug up or donw the idle goes up or down.

you can put a small flat screw driver into the plug and use it to press down on the middle of the female end. That will make it a bit more snug a connection. Make sure you clean off the ends on the male end though.

What ended up fixing your problem? My wife and I are experiencing the same problem.

Thanks,

Sam
