Hi, my 2001 nissan maxima gxe threw the service engine light. I ran the codes and came up with these three.

2001 nissan maxima gxe with 3 liter v-6 with 47k and an auto trans.

p420 for low catalist effenciy

p0158p0159

one was for a faulty bank 2 oxeygen sensor.other was for hight voltage output from ox sensor.

First question is the bank 2 sensor. is this the oxygen sensor located right befor the cat? and thus causing the 158 and 159 codes. causing engine to run in a failsafe mode with triggered the catalitic code? I live in the middle of nebraska and closest dealer is some time away. I am mechanically inclined, and want to be able to fix this myself. Also once the faulty parts have been replaced will the check light go out or will i have to clear the codes first? and help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you,adam

ok if your car is still under warrenty take it to the dealer there are tsb's on both incedents which require a reprogram of the ecm for both. but the on the o2 codes you will probably get a knew o2 as well. should be covered under emissons warrenty

there no need to email them to you they have an asist computer program at the dealer to pull them up on. bank 2 is the front o2 (left cyl head) but this all should be covered under emissions warrenty as long as your car isnt a salvage title. at least in california its that way.

hello again. I went to a dealer and they wanted to charge me $400 to put new O2 sensor in an reprogram pcu. I refused to pay it and was told befor i brought the car in that it was all covered under emissions warrenty. Once they had the car, they claimed there were no TSBs, then said it wasnt warrentable. please help me. My next closeest dealer is 230 miles away in denver.

thanks

Don't quote me on this but I believe the warranty on O2 sensors change on 2000 or 2001 and up to 3yrs-36000 miles.

They siad it was faulty and had to be replaced. They wanted to charge me 375 to replace it and reprogram the pcu. When i refused, they tried to charge me 115 for diagnostic work. I didnt pay them beacuse i allready knew what the problem was. well my car has 48 thousand miles now. I have never had a nissan car that needed a o2 sensor before 75 thousand miles.

well drjohn is but isnt correct. i looked on assist. there are 2 tsb one for the 420 code which is for catalytic efficency NTB00-070a which is mearly a reprogram of the ecm. the o2 tsb is NTB01-016B. both of which are covered under the emissions warrenty. but here is the catch. I pulled out the warrenty book yesterday and checked the covered warrenty items. here where I live it is covered to 50,000 miles(california emissions warrenty) but apparently the rest of the country it is only 36,000 miles. so it looks like the dealership is correct about it not being covered where your at. but you now have the exact tsb numbers they said did not exist. the o2 tsb requires replacement of the bad o2 and an ecm reprogram. but the ecm reprogram for either tsb would cover both since there is only one updated program for the car. so if you replace the o2 yourself they should charge you no more then 1 hr labor to do the reprogram.

I know was J/k. I know it must be frustrating. but you could get the reproram done for just the 420 code that does not require any parts for that job. that would end up erasing both codes but the o2 codes may return.
