2001 Maxima starter quit working so I replaced with a rebuilt from Autozone. Two months later grinding noise on start up on two attempts then it starts on the third. Works fine for two weeks then the same thing for two days in a row. Returned starter to Autozone and they reluctantly replaced with another after testing and saying they tested the first one and it tested ok. Installed the second starter and it was fine for two weeks and now the samething. When replacing I looked inside at the flywheel and there are no missing teeth and very little wear. The grinding noise sounds like like the starter is not catching and spinning really fast. Help please so that I don't have to take this to the shop because we know that means big bucks!!! I will be forever grateful.

Did you tighten the mounting bolts correctly? How's the battery - must read >12.5 VDC with engine off if it's good. So if the installation is correct, the battery, flywheel and starter pinion gear are good, then the starter may be 'sticky' resulting in partial engagement during starting. It's possible that the refurbished starter may have so much gunk inside or dried up grease which was not corrected during rebuilt, making it sticky.
