My 2001 Maxima was idleing fast (1500 RPM) It also pulsed from 1500-2000 RPM. The service code was P0505. My mechanic tried to reset the computer. . He also reprogrammed the computer to the current software. He then tried to clean the Idle Air Control valve. All to no avail. He then determined the IACV had a bad servo. He replaced the IACV with a new unit. The problem persisted. Now he says (after consulting with Nissan) that when the IACV servo motor goes bad it burns out a circuit in the computer. He is calling for a new ECM. Nissan says this happens also when the sensor on the engine mount fails. Is all this possible?

It is indeed possible. Make sure they check the motor mounts as well as this is the probable cause of the ECM going bad. I have done a few of these myself and at first, they were difficult to diagnose. I then spoke to a fellow tech and he informed me of the proper procedure.

Hey there,

I have a couple of questions.

I just started to have the same problems with my Max. When they checked the computer it did not indicate any codes as of yet. If I just change the valve will that correct the problem. According to my dealership I need to change the Idle control Valve, Engine mounts front and rear, and the computer. If it is not fixed what can happen to the engine? I'm not sure if I should just sell the car, in case other stuff starts to happen.

thanks

Once you replace those, you should have no issues with the car outside of general maintainence.

Kenny,

I have the same issue with the IACV and ECM with my 2001 Maxima. As far as the Engine Mounts go what am I looking for? How is the Engine mounts and the IACV & ECM inter-related? I just replaced the IACV and looking for fair and reasonable price for a ECM. What do I need to be aware of? Ebay has them for around $250 programed to your VIN#. Is there anywhere I may be able to find used/rebuilt/reprogramed one? Or is there anyway to repair the one that shorted out?In addtion, I recently found Free FSM on some .net formum/website but cannot locate it again. Do you happen to know where I can find FSM for 2001 Maxima online (not Chilton & not Haynes) for free. I may have to go to the library.

There isn't any way to repair the shorted out ECM. The only way is to replace the ECM. As for what your looking for on the motor mounts, I'll ask a fellow tech at work because he is the one who always seems to end up with those jobs.

Kenny- I replaced the IACV and it was high idling again and after a week of driving it would no longer idle or returned to its previous state. I realize I need a new ECM, but did I just damage the new IACV I put in a week ago? Any word with sensors on the Engine Mounts? Is the Idle Speed Control Motor the same as IACV? Is there a way I can contact your co-worker directly b/c I may have more issues than just the IACV and ECM...

Thanks,Ryan
