Hi guys, I'm new to the forum. I've learned alot already. I'll be picking up a 1 owner 2001 Pathfinder LE on Thursday and I'm already researching and deciding what I'd like to do to it. The truck has 126,000 miles on it and seems to have been well maintaned and kept clean.

I plan on changing all fluids and doing my own tuneup right away so that I can verify everything is fresh.

I would like to have a high-flow muffler installed, not necessarily for better sound but to help it breathe better and hopefully increase mpg's a bit. Does anyone have any personal experience or brand to recommend?
I looked on Magnaflow and Flowmaster website but neither have applications for the 2001.

Any input or suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you want aftermarket you have to go custom. There are a few on here that have done duals but you have to ditch the spare tire unless you run the pipes side by side. Just do a search & you will find a few threads on this topic. I just put a 350z muffler on mine but still need to cut out my 2nd cats. Bosal makes a direct fit system that you can find on rockauto .com

Awesome thanks for the input. Do you know much about the Bosal systems? I've not heard much about them. I'm curious if I'll still get good performance from it without it being too loud.

I've thought about the 350z exhaust or the FX35 exhaust myself. I love the sound of it. I imagine the engine is fairly the same as in my pathfinder? Both are 3.5L. I'm sure cams are different, etc.

Does the 350z exhaust on your infiniti sound identical to the 350z?

Thanks for the help

I think the bosal is more of a stock application. Right now my qx does not sound like a 350z. I'm working on that though. I think once I get the cats out it will be close. I have some video up 350z-cat-back-on-my-qx4-plus-more-t527656.html

Mre than likely you will need to go custom, but don't be put off by having to do a little research. In the end, it may end up costing a bit more because nothing is pre-assembled, but then again, it might end up saving you money depending on how thrifty you can be.

IIRC, the PF (R50) has are front (main) muffler under the passenger footwell and a rear (2nd) muffler just behind the p-sed rear wheel.

I'm not sure which one is the resonator and which one is the muffler, but generally the resonators are closer to the engine in most exhaust systems.

When the time comes to replace our '04's exhaust, I was going to do two 12-14" resonators in place of the main muffler and then another 12-14" muffler in place of the 2nd (rear) muffler.

My reason for the two resonators is because not many companies make a two in, one out. Speaking of companies, you can mix and match mufflers and resonators, but it might be a good idea to stay with the same company for both as each company designes their stuff to work better with their other stuff.

Saw these the other day and thought they would make a great resonator as they are thin and could easily mount side by side. If I went with Hushpower, it would be two HP-2 Shoties 409S and one HP-2 muffler at the rear. I would do the same with Magnaflow products, 2 resonators and one muffler at the rear. The resonators would be used to reduce the harshness and possibly cutdown on the drone.

Size (length), in/out diameter would all depend on how much fabbing would need to take place. 2" in/out on the resonaotres with a Y pipe to 2.5" which would lead to the rear muffler 2.5" in/out. That is probably what I will do when the time comes to replace.

That's great info KO3sport! Thanks for the details. I don't know enough about exhaust systems so why the 2 resonators up front? Will this give it more sound/hp? Also, would this setup make it real noisy at 75mph cruising? I don't want something loud and obnoxious but a nice, clean strong sound without a headache everytime I hit the hwy and definately don't want it to sound like a honda ricer :)

Thanks for all the help guys!

(Exhaust info on page FE-10 of the FSM)

The front (main) muffler is 2 pipes in, one pipe out. I have not come across a muffler from an aftermarket mfg that does this same thing. And, I believe the 2 pipes in are smaller (2") than the one pipe out (2.5") which adds to the oddness.

My theory is to use a resonator for each bank, thus two resonators. They are simple one in/one out, so the options are endless. Even a (two) simple 4" round canisters (Magnaflow p/n 10444) could act as the resonators and a Magnaflow 7" round (p/n 14716) would act as the 2nd (post) muffler.

To go from two pipes to one, I would need a Y adapter (Magnaflow p/n 10748) to help make the transition from 2" to 2.5".

As far as sound, I have no idea how it would sound. I think it would sound just fine as all pipe diameters are not excessively large, i.e. 4"+. I'm not running a 600hp turbo diesel, so large pipes aren't necessary.

I don't know about the drone issue either. I do know that the longer the muffler, the more sound absorbing is done. So, a 14" long muffler body will be louder than a 24" long muffler body. Sure, internal construction has something to do with it too, but when comparing like mufflers, the longer one will be quieter.

To avoid drone, I would not go with something like these Spintechs. Good mufflers, low profile, but much louder and burbley than those that use a stainless steel matting to help absorb/attenuate unwanted sound frequencies.
