Whats up peopleI just recently upgraded from a '95 g20 to '01 I30t and found out this new used car is very nice in all aspects. I found a few minor problems with this car but I'm getting them fix little by little. One this I can't manage to figure out is how to use the steering wheel control. I have no idea if there is a special button to make it work or if there is something wrong with it. Pressing the buttons don't do anything. Any help?

By the way nice forum and useful information here

Hey there and Welcome to NICO!

Congrats on the new to you I30.I have always liked these cars.

It sounds like the switch might be bad. There are a few tests you can run to isolate this incident. I do not have the link at work, if no one else posts it I will send it to you when I get home. Do the buttons on the radio itself work?

You will need a multimeter with resistance capability to corectly diagnose this issue.

Great to have aboard, look forward to seeing some pics of the new ride.

I am new to the group and I am having the same problems. I have a 2001 i30 and the volume control on the radio itself is intermittant and the steering wheel controls are the same. I just bought a replacement radio on ebay and need to know what to do about the controls on the steering wheel.

Thanks,rg

Cool, thanks for the quick response. Yea, I bought a factory radio taken from a 2001 i30 (CNB28 PN-2383D). It says they guarantee it to work for 90 days so I will see. If I can get the steering wheel controls to work, that would be great. I have also noticed that when I am changing the volume on the steering controls it will change the station.

That does indeed sound more like a switch failure but there are a few other things that may cause that. The use common wires and varying resistance to change the input signal to the radio. Maybe one of your internal resistors has taken a crap.

I will see what happens when I hook up the new radio. Is there anywhere I can get some steps in replacing this radio. Even for a 7 year old car, the dash on this thing is perfect and I don't want to damage it.

Here is the electrical section of the ESM. Page EL-206 starts the audio sub section. EL Section

Body and Trim

BT-29 and 30 have a great breakdown of the dash. I use a plastic panel tool to seperate them.

If my iServe acct worked here I would post the pics of what you need to do. It's pretty easy to get the radio in and out. Just don't pry on the trim too much.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask were always here to help.

That is cool. I just won the auction for the radio today so I won't be installing the radio for a couple of weeks. I can wait on the pictures, the more information I have the better. Diagrams are good, but pictures are better.

trent, what did you replace? The entire housing or a switch inside? Also, did you get it from the dealer?

I can't find the site that I ordered it from but it was the switch and housing. I think a dealer supply's the website.

On mine, I think the touchpads are worn and the contacts are just not working correctly and it just needs to be replaced. So, yes I may have to get the entire housing on mine. On the volume and the channel buttons I sometimes have to press real hard to get them to do anything.

Honestly I have not posted any there yet. When I get home today I will edit the page from the ESM showing what all needs to be taken out and add my own advise to it. I have not replaced one in a while and I do not have any coming in right now.

Steve, I hope you didn't forget about me. I am going to start this first thing in the morning. I have to get this done soon because the radio has a 30 day warantee.

Crap I am sorry I have been really busy.

Its pretty straight forward. Remove the trim and remove the 6 screw securing the radio in. Once you get it out, use a pocket screwdriver to release the connectors on the back of the radio and pull it out. Once you get it out remove the screws on the side of the unit that attach the mounting bracket to the radio. Installation is cake, just reverse the order.

I sincerely apologize for the belated response, Good Luck. Let me know how it turns out.

Steve, It went well. The only difference is that on my i30 the vent trim in the picture didn't match what I had. I tried prying around the radio like the picture said but it wouldn't budge. Then I tried up around the vents and that piece came out. It was just the vent part and it didn't wrap around the radio like what the picture said. I got that part out and it exposed the two top screws. I then took out the bottom trip (D) around the gear shift and that exposed the bottom two screws. that freed up the entire radio and air conditioner assembly. Rather than unhooking all the wires from the all the other stuff I just tried to disconnect and remove the radio. I was able to disconnect the wire clips, but could not for the life of me (short of stripping out the heads) get the screws out that held the radio in the brackets. So, I took the car to Car Toys and the installed the radio for me for $45. Well worth it. It works fine now. Now I just need to find a replacement for the steering wheel controls.

Thanks for all your help. This forum was a great help. I am going to value this resource as an Infinite owner.

I am really glad you got it taken care of. Sorry the pics were not as descriptive as I would have liked them to be. I will articalize this thread and use your real experience to enhance the pics as I spaced the fact there was two screw on top. The way some of those bolts get removed is with the services of my trusty impact screwdriver.

Glad to see we have a happy new member, stick around theres usually some interesting topics here.

Thank you for your help as well.
