I have 2001 I30 with ~130k miles.

Here is the story:-> 4 months ago CEL light up with a P0420. I know what the code means and the ECM firmware was updated sometime before the CEL. Car runs fine, returns ~23 MPG mixed driving and is well maintained.

-> I reset the CEL to see if it comes back. 4 months and ~2500 miles later CEL is off, OBD II scanner shows no codes, but displays that the ECM did not finish self-diagnostics for the catalyst control system.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 4 months of almost daily trips for >5 miles and several >100 miles should be enough cycles to finish self-diagnostics, no?I don't want to start replacing random parts without a good reason. I live in CA, so I need to fix this problem before smog check time.

Any suggestions?

I have a 99I but the OBD II Diagnostic should be similar. The SRT (System Readiness Test) looks into - Catalystr, Evap System, O2 Sensor, O2 Sensor Heater and EGR System. Under NORMAL (Zone A) driving condition (sea level, flat road, OAT at 68-86F), assuming coolant temperature is >156F and speed requirements have been met, the CATALYST test will be completed in 11 minutes or more of driving. If NORMAL driving condition is not met, SRT test of the Catalyst will be done under Zone B requirements. Zone B test begins after 17 minutes of driving. It requires driving at steady speed of 53-60 MPH for 3 minutes or more to complete the test.

Use the scanner to clear the ECM of CEL/SRT codes (or disconnect the battery for >24 hours). Download a copy of FSM, and use the EC (Engine Control System) chapter and look for the Driving Pattern info and other requirements to complete the System Readiness Test.

Good luck
