I have looked for info on how to connect my Ipod to my i30 and I did not find much. I just did a little putzing around in my car and I have my iPod connected in a way that I am happy with and I wanted to share in case any other folks are interested in connecting their ipod without buying any expensive adapters.

I wanted to connect my iPod using a line in rather than using the iTrip. My iTrip works great in my wife's car but i think it sounds pretty "crispy" in my i30. I was going to spend the $100 and buy the AUX-NISS adapter to allow me to connect my iPod instead of the CD changer... but rather than spending the money... i did a little cutting and soldering.

I was able to splice in to the audio line that is running from the stock CD changer in the trunk (clarion cv737) and connect the 1/8 jack to my ipod.

There is a wiring connector about 5 inches down the cord from the CD changer. I cut the audio lines and left the power and control lines for the changer. the wires are as follows:

Green/Black - Left NegGreen - Left PosGrey/Black - Right NegGrey - Right Pos

I could be wrong on the left/right above... i might have them backwards. i need to do a bit more testing. Let me also mention that this will DISABLE the CD changer since I cut the audio lines. Now when I select the cd changer from my head unit, the changer will spin up the cd... but the actual sound will come from the Ipod. I realize that i am beating up on the changer by leaving it playing as I listen to the ipod... but to me it is a small cost for the great sound.

When i am ready to sell the car I will re-solder the CD changer lines. The cuts i made will be hidden inside the cable guide.

i know this is a cheepy hack job... but there may be other folks out there that are in need of an inexpensive way to get an ipod connected.

Good deal.

I know people have been looking for a way to do that, but I had not seen anyone successful in hacking it yet. Next step would be a way to use the interface without disabling the CD changer.

I need to get an ipod at some point. I have a pre-amp with aux RCA inputs that can be used along with the pre-amp volume knob

that is a good idea. I would recommend that if you have a dockable ipod, that you implement a means to use the dock, because the jacks on the ipods wear out fairly easy. my 2nd gen ipod is bad in the car. any time it moves, the speakers pop and crackle. but my wifes mini is attached to a belkin car charger with an audio out and through the cassette deck of my G35. I'm currently making a center console dock, out of an existing dock. I've got the dock ready to mount into a console, however, its hard to find any console pieces at the junkyard to practice the install, before I rip up the real thing. another option is that special cable, but I can build a dock for the price of the cable so I would rather have my ipod where I can see it.

what would happen if you didn't let the changer spin up the CD, split the lines closer to the the HU, and just ran the audio lines from there...and installed your dock in the center console or above the center AC vents with the power line spliced into the dock wireing so it would actually turn on the iPod when u selected CD/CDG.

that seems like it would work to me...or would you have to fuse and loop the changer so the HU thinks it's connected all the time??

yaaaa...they're not gonna respond b/c they've only got THREE posts, lol. Hi and bye...but i will try to figure this out b/c i don't mind trashing my CD changer and wires to get the answer.
