When running at 60 my car has a slight surge then backs off

Is this a common problem?

Does anyone know of a fix?

There were engine check light on and Nissan cleared them and told me it was something to do with the catalytic converter and the mass air flow.

Could these be related?

They reset these and the light has stayed off.

Any advice.

Has the problem happened again since the check engine light was reset? The MAF does control the air fuel metering so that could have something to do with it.

well who knows. The engine check light just came back on.

They are saying 4 to 500 to fix the mass air flow and $1200 for the catalytic converter.

I remember a guy put a "generic" catalytic converter in a Sebring of mine some years back

Any reason something like this cannot be done on an infiniti?

If you can operate a flat-head screw driver, you can replace your own MAF. Once you see it, you'll know where it goes (on the intake piping from the air filter to the throttle body).

As for eliminating the cat...it depends on which one you're talking about. There are two precats (one for each exhaust manifold), and the main cat. A y-pipe or headers will eliminate the two precats and give added performance. If you are wanting to replace the main cat, I would recommend a hi flow cat, or take it to a local exhaust shop and see what they can do for you.
