My check engin light is on in my 2001 I30. The dealer checked and tole me I needed to replace the front converter and the O2 sensor. The price was high and I took it to a Meineke shop who told me a throttle and injector cleaning "could " do the trick without replacing any of the exhaust system.

Any opinions?

First off, welcome aboard!

Secondly.. Did the dealer reset the CEL and has it come back on? Did they give you the codes your computer was triggering? How many miles on the motor and how is the car running? Have you had any past work done? Personally, sounds like the cleaning (injectors and MAF sensor) "may" take care of your problem, but without the details, it would be a guess.

I seriously doubt that the throttle and intake cleaning will clear up an emissions problem. As a matter of fact, I'd be willing to put my left nut on the line by saying that it will not take care of the problem. Meinike is trying to get your money. Go with the dealer suggested fix.

Milage is 109K. The code was P0420 and the dealer did not reset the CEL.

The p0420 code is the three way catalyst malfunction code. It happens all the time on the 4th gen Max's and I30s. You'll need to replace the front tube assembly and the rear 02 sensor and you should be set.

Yup sounds like the catalyst. Luckily i was within federal warranty or whatever and they put a new y pipe on for free.
