2001 G20 Gear Shift locks

Hello every one, I have a 2001 G20 with 51000 mil. Car periodically wont start, often stock in park. then in a few hours car starts and with a little play gets out of park. Any clue?

Does it crank over and just not start, or does it not crank over at all?

Thank you for reply....no it does not crank over..no sound. but in a few hours all of a suden it starts as nothing was wrong. sometimes it starts and the shifter still locked in park.

There's 2 things I can think of that are going wrong here:
1.) Your "park" sensor is messed up. Have you tried jiggling the shifter while you turn the key?
2.) Your brake pedal switch is messed up. It won't let you shift out of park until it sees that the brakes are on.

Those are my 2 guesses, but it can certainly be something else as well.

Yes it could be you have a faulty ignition switch and I would also check your battery connection. Make sure the terminals are clean and you have a good ground. Are you getting a click-click sound at the starter when it does not start?

Battery is new, connections are secured. No clicking sound or any other sound.

The ignition switch could definitely be the problem then!!!

Here's a link to the service manual for your car. See if you can locate how to take it out from one of the PDFs. Normally you just have to remove the shroud below the steering wheel and the switch and all the wiring harnesses/connectors are right there.

I replaced my ignition switch...that did not solve the problem. Now I got a nutral switch, can you tell me where is this unit is located? any help would be greatly appreciated.
