2001 Altima Transmission Issues

Hoping someone with more knowledge/experience can point in the right direction. My dauhter has a 2001 Altima, 4 spd auto and is 100 miles away in college. Today she called and told me when beginning to back out of a parking space she heard a clunk and then the car would not go into reverse or drive...just acts as if it's in neutral. I'm thinking it's a linkage issue but really know nothing about the transmission. Is it an electronic setup or a linkage/cable thing going to the transaxle? Assuming the transmission didn't instantly crater and it is indeed a shifter issue, where do I start? We had the car towed to her house until I can get up there ina day or two. Anyone had this issue or have advise? Thanks!!
