Looking for some advice on an idle problem. The car has 64K miles on it. When you come to stop and sit a for a short while the car will be begin to idle rough, I guess it could be described like it was searching for idle speed. It gets worse the longer you sit. When you give th car gas it smooths out until you sit at idle for a period of time again. Also if the A/C is running it does fine and no problems when stopped.

Sounds like the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve). Those are quite commonly bad on these cars.

I just checked online, seems that they are not very cheap! Is it "OK" not to replace this? or will it cause more problems down the line?

How many hours of labor if I decide to replace the IACV. I do a fair amount of mechanical work. Its not my car and I dont have it handy to look and see what may be involved.

Also any recomendations on whether to go back OEM or an aftermarket version.

Can the IACV be cleaned on these, will that help. My daughters 2000 Sable developed similar symptons about 2 years ago, I took the IACV off and cleaned it using Seafoam and put back on, have not had an idle problem since. But only takes 5 minutes tops to remove it on that car so it was worth the try.

I wouldn't try to clean it. It's a PITA for sure but would you rather your idle bounce around all day?

Ok, replaced the IACV as suggested and the idle issue is still there. I also cleaned the throttle body while I was working. I did notice if you applly very light pressure on the gas pedel the idle will smooth out and be normal. Take foot off and it starts bouncing around between normal and low, turn on AC and it smooths out as well.

ANy other suggests?

Intake manifold vacuum leak is VERY common on the 01 altima.

Simply Clean the EGR Valve with brake cleaner . And after put it to neutral and rev it until it runs fine again!
