I've got a 2000 6cyl Xterra that let me sitting Friday. Acted like it was out of gas (it was above 1/4), bucking around, then just lost power. Let it set till the next morning ... fired right up. Got about half way home (engine had warmed to normal operating temp by then) and it started doing it again, continued to loose power and shut off.

I got it towed to a garage. He ran diagnostics on it and concluded that it was the knock sensor. Said my intake manifold gasket was leaking and may have shorted it out.

Do the symptoms fit the problem. Anyone else have this happen? He's replacing everything tomorrow. I understand the amount of work that needs done to replace this. I just hope it solves the problem.

it should recifiy the prob, the knock sensor has the ability to remove timing if it feels the engine is in jepordy of damaging itself. it if pulls enough timing, the engine can start to runn really bad and sometimes not at all. the knock sensors arent cheap either. make sure you buy OEM and not aftermarket on anything electrical related, especially something as difficult as a knock sensor to get at.also, it wouldnt be a bad idea to replace the subarness to the knock sensor too as it gets a beating from all the heat it has to absorb during its life under the intake manifold

I had the same issues. A shop replaced my fuel pump, which did absolutely nothing, and cost me just short of my first born. I recently had the throttle position sensor and the knock sensor replaced. I brought it home tonight, the "Check Engine Light" came on and now it's cutting off again. I'm taking it back to the shop tomorrow.
