I have a 2000 Xterra with 80000 miles. Infrequently, the instrument cluster will quit displaying. The temp and fuel gages (analog display) quit registering, the speedometer and tachometer (analog display) go to zero, while the odometer (digital) goes dark. The panel light does stay luminated during these times.

I have not exmaned the cluster as of yet. It is not a commonplace problem as of now, but I am trying to research it so that I will be educated when it does become a real problem.

Is this a common problem? If I replace the instrument cluster, does the odometer reading change. I assume that since the odometer is digital, the actual milage is retained in the computer and the odometer is just displays the signal.

the odo reading is stored in the cluster not the ECM. Yes it is not an uncommon problem on the xterra frontier. I am suprised you didnt mention drivability issues associated with the loss of guages it can happen as well. but you have to replace the unified meter. that can be either the cluster as a whole or the circuit board behind it. depends on production dates.
