When the timing belt gets replaced, is the crank(shaft) pulley also replaced? Or is it moved in the process?

I had the timing belt replaced and now have an issue with the crank pulley...the mechanic states the two have nothing to do with each other.

Many thanks for any insight or help....

Cheers,JS

I can't say about the QX4 specifically, but what I can tell you is that the only way the crank pulley would have anything to do with the timing belt if it is indeed a belt and not chains, would be if the timing belts were external which is rare and I would bet the QX4 is like 99% of the other cars out there and has internal timing belts/chains. So, provided the timing belts are internal the crank pulley would be for your accessory drive only, a/c, alternator, water pump, power steering, etc... Wait to see if any Infiniti techs reply as they have more specific info for this vehicle than I. Chances are that the pulley doesn;t have anything to do with your timing. Good luck.

I did some resaearch for you. The QX4 has a belt with a cog-type pulley on the crank and cam. I seriously doubt replacing a cog pulley on the crank would be standard procedure if it is in fact the timing belt pulley that is the problem rather than the accessory drive pulley.

Wow - Thanks for the quick response.

So here is the situation I am in. I'll try to be clearer...

Had the timing belt replaced at 105K. A day later (after the timing belt was rplaced and I drove it home) I noticed a "whirring" in the motor that began when I turned the engine and it idled...and could hear it when driving.

I called Infiniti and stated the issue and I would be bringing it back in. When they looked at it, they stated I needed to have the crankshaft pulley replaced.

So...I am wondering if I have an argument here. The "whirring" never happened prior to the timing belt replacement. QUESTION; When they do the timing belt service, would the crankshaft / cramkshaft pulley be moved? I am wondering if the did not put things back properly, or "accidently" clipped something so the crankshaft pulley was damaged.

Net, I don't want to pay for their mistakes...but if the crankshaft pulley is not touched during the process of replacing a timing belt, then I will have to pay...otherwise, I'll go to the Service manager and ask it to be comped.

Thanks again for the help!!!

Chances are it was getting near failing, and their working in that area removing parts to get to the timing belt{fan/clutch/drive belts/cover,etc} accelerated its failure.

Good luck gettin them to pay for it though, as if it was in new condition, their work wouldnt have destroyed it.
