2000 QX4 suddenly won't start

Hi all,
Had the qx4 for a couple months, it's been fine. suddenly wont start. Felt like a fuel pump. replaced it, no luck. replaced cap, rotor, plugs. no luck. have good fuel pressure and spark. Acts like it wants to start for a half second but never does. Noticed the security light was staying illuminated when the key was turned on. Started to suspect the imobilizer system. Had a mechanic friend look at it. He spotted a white box under the dash near the ODB port. probably 3"x3"x 1/2". he thinks its a dealer installed gps device for finding an immobilizing non paying customers. I bought the car cash so this wouldn't apply to me. Can anyone confirm that the white box is indeed an aftermarket device? I cant find it in the FSM. Thanks in advance.

The white box is right up against the steering shaft directly above the OBD port. Anyone else have this white box?

Can you post a picture of the box and its location? Here's some snapshots of my 01 in case it helps. I didn't see any white box mounted to the steering column.

Thanks for the reply. On yours, the box in question is not white and is turned standing on end. the greenish grey box directly under the white OBD port. In my case,the box was white, mounted flat, stock and faulty. it's the anti theft unit. $700 for the dealer to replace and reprogram 2 new keys. 8^{
